What is a Midwife?
A Midwife is a traditional care provider for mothers and infants. A midwife is a trained professional with expertise and skills in supporting women to maintain a healthy pregnancy and have optimal birth and recovery during the postpartum period. Midwives provide women with individualized care uniquely suited to their physical, mental, emotional, spiritual and cultural needs. Midwifery is a woman-centered empowering model of maternity care that is utilized in all countries of the world.
What is a CPM and LM?
CPM (Certified Professional Midwife) is a national certification. The holders of this title have met national midwifery training standards set by NARM (North American Registry of Midwives), which is affiliated with MANA (Midwives Alliance of North America) and passed the national credentialing exam. All CPMs participate in continuing education requirements to renew and maintain their credentials.
LM (Licensed Midwife) is a midwife practicing in a state where home birth is legal. An LM must meet certain state licensing requirements and pass a licensing exam in order to carry a license. An LM practices under a state-generated set of policies and protocols. Educational requirements vary from state to state but most require years of training and meeting specific requirements prior to taking the qualifying state exam. A regulatory board is set up to maintain the integrity of excellent care for mothers and babies. The state of Idaho requires all Licensed Midwives to present proof of 10 hours of continuing education in the field of midwifery care every year.

What is a Red Tent?
In ancient times when people lived a nomadic lifestyle, during the time of menstruation and childbirth women would gather together in a single tent to share stories, welcome babies, and have ceremonies in the privacy of the sacred space. A place for women to celebrate the unique journey of womanhood. Men honored this space. Likewise, we welcome and strive to create a "Red Tent" for the women of Southwest Idaho and surrounding areas in the comfort and convenience of their own home while still practicing evidence based birth and newborn care.
Is homebirth safe?
Yes! For the low risk pregnancy, homebirth can be safer than giving birth in a hospital.
A great majority of low-risk, healthy women are excellent candidates for a homebirth. For more information, please visit Midwives Alliance of North America (MANA) article on the safety of homebirth at: https://mana.org/blog/home-birth-safety-outcomes
